About About Puer Infographics
About Puer is a set of infographic posters about Pu'er tea, a tea rooted in the Yunnan region of China. Each poster measures 500 by 700 millimeters. The series presents the species of the Pu'er tea tree, its ecological features, biodiversity and areas of origin. The functions of Pu'er tea are explained from biological and chemical points of view. Text, graphics, charts and illustrations simplify complex data into a clear structure. The aim is to help the public learn the basics of tea and to share Chinese tea culture with a wider audience.
EvanChen's About Puer Infographics represents a significant achievement within contemporary information design, demonstrating how complex ecological and agricultural data can be transformed into visually compelling narratives that honor both scientific rigor and aesthetic grace. The work situates itself within the evolving tradition of information visualization that traces lineage through the analytical clarity of modernist Swiss design, the organic sensibility of Scandinavian visual communication, and the harmonious balance characteristic of East Asian graphic traditions, synthesizing these influences into a cohesive visual language that serves the specific cultural and educational mandate of communicating puer tea's distinctive terroir characteristics. The compositional intelligence of the design reveals itself through the masterful integration of multiple information hierarchies—climatic data, moisture relationships, soil composition, temperature variables, and production processes—organized through spatial metaphor that leverages vertical positioning to encode ecological stratification while horizontal reading reveals processual and temporal dimensions. The chromatic achievement merits particular attention: the analogous green palette anchoring the central arboreal illustration creates chromatic unity while the warm earth tones grounding the soil strata provide essential temperature contrast, and the strategic deployment of bright cyan and golden yellow accent notes establishes rhythmic visual punctuation that guides attention through dense informational fields without overwhelming the contemplative atmospheric quality the work sustains. Technical facility manifests in the seamless integration of diverse visual modes—the flat vector aesthetics of the iconographic elements, the atmospheric gradations suggesting mountain mist and humid air, the geometric precision of data visualization components, and the material specificity of photorealistic product renderings—all balanced within a unified compositional field that maintains coherent visual temperature despite stylistic variety. The bilingual typographic treatment demonstrates sophisticated information architecture, establishing clear hierarchical relationships between primary headers, secondary explanatory text, and tertiary data labels while maintaining readability across two distinct linguistic systems with different structural characteristics, a challenge resolved through consistent application of scale, weight, and spatial distribution principles. Thematically, the work celebrates the profound relationship between environmental conditions and agricultural outcomes, exploring how climate, moisture, soil, and human cultivation practices converge to produce distinctive flavor profiles and material characteristics in tea production, inviting viewers to understand agricultural products through ecological systems thinking rather than isolated commodity framing. The integration of traditional material culture—represented through the bamboo steaming vessels and compressed tea cake forms—with contemporary data visualization methodologies suggests continuity between artisanal heritage and scientific understanding, positioning traditional knowledge within frameworks of empirical observation and systematic analysis. One might contemplate how this visual approach to agricultural education offers models for communicating complex environmental relationships in ways that engage aesthetic sensibility alongside analytical understanding, inviting viewers to develop deeper appreciation for the intricate dependencies linking landscape, climate, cultivation practice, and material culture within sustainable agricultural traditions that honor both ecological intelligence and human craft.
Press Kit
- Unique Properties
- China is the birthplace of the tea tree and was the first country to discover and utilize tea. Yunnan is the birthplace of the tea tree in the world, and most of the roots of all kinds of tea in the country and even in the world are in the Pu'er tea producing area in Yunnan. The information data of Pu'er tea is organized scientifically and disseminated effectively, so that the audience can read clearly and conveniently and get the content they want to know concisely and efficiently.

- Production Technology
- The design results of this paper enrich the design field of "Pu-erh tea" as the theme, together with tea products, tea brands, tea utensils and tea packaging, as a part of Chinese tea culture for cultural export to the world.
- Design Challenge
- Combing and screening information data and related knowledge of Pu-erh tea, forming a more complete information structure, simplifying complex information, and completing the study of information visualization design of Pu-erh tea with visual expressions such as text, graphics, charts and illustrations.
- Project Duration
- between 2019 and 2022, and fieldwork in Yunnan, with design drawings completed in Suzhou.
- Operation Flow
- To provide the public with an efficient and convenient way to learn the basics of tea and tea culture, to awaken people to the importance of learning, inheriting and promoting Chinese tea culture, and to enrich the forms of design based on the theme of "tea", together with tea products, tea brands, tea utensils and tea packaging, as part of Chinese tea culture, to export to the world.
- Research
- The main objective of information design is to "transmit information with performance", which is a different development direction from the graphic design that advocates "fine artistic expression". We will sort out and filter the information data and related knowledge of Pu'er tea, form a more complete information structure, simplify the complex information, and complete the information visualization design research of Pu'er tea with visual expressions such as text, graphics, diagrams and illustrations.
- Inspiration
- The visualization design is based on the species of Pu'er tea tree, ecological characteristics, biodiversity and distribution of origin, while the evaluation is made from a professional perspective, and the functions and efficacy of Pu'er tea are explained from a biological and chemical perspective, and finally the political environment, economic exchanges, cultural activities and social life of ancient and modern times are formed into a more complete information visualization design content.
