Interviews

Design Interview

What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?

RUH was inspired by the connection between movement, nature, and human energy. The project explores how visual identity can remind people about their relationship with the environment and conscious living while translating cultural heritage into a contemporary sportswear language.

What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?

My main focus was creating a scalable identity system that could function across sportswear, branding, packaging, and digital applications while still carrying emotional and cultural depth. I wanted the design to feel modern, minimal, and meaningful at the same time.

What are your future plans for this award winning design?

I plan to continue developing RUH as a complete sports and lifestyle brand with expanded visual applications, motion design, campaigns, and physical products. I also hope the project will contribute to greater international visibility for contemporary Central Asian design.

Grand Interview

The Ruh Corporate Identity stands out for its deeply layered symbolic architecture, weaving together a labyrinth form, fingerprint motifs, and topographic typographic lines into a single cohesive visual system. Could you walk us through the moment you realized these three distinct symbolic threads could coexist within one identity, and what the process of aligning them into a unified graphic language looked like in practice?

At first, the fingerprint, labyrinth and topographic lines appeared to be very different symbols. However, during the development process I realized that they were all speaking about the same subject: human identity. There are billions of people in the world, and what unites us is our shared humanity. At the same time, every person is unique. A fingerprint became a symbol of that individuality. No two fingerprints are the same, just as no two people experience life in exactly the same way.The labyrinth represents the journey of life. Each person makes choices, follows different paths, encounters challenges and develops their own understanding of the world. In this sense, the labyrinth became a metaphor for personal growth and self-discovery.The topographic lines represent the land, place and environment that shape us. Whether we realize it or not, our origins influence how we see the world and who we become. When these three ideas came together, I realized they were not separate symbols but parts of one narrative: the individual, the journey and the land that shaped them. This is why Ruh is not intended to speak only to people from Kazakhstan. It is a personal conversation with every individual. The phrase “Born From The Land” invites people to reflect on their own roots, experiences and identity. Regardless of culture or nationality, everyone comes from somewhere, carries a story and follows a unique path through life. The moment these ideas merged into a single visual system was a breakthrough in the project. It revealed a deeper meaning that allowed the identity to grow beyond a graphic symbol and become a reflection on human identity itself.

Cultural sensitivity in branding has become one of the most urgently discussed topics among designers working across global markets today, and the Ruh Corporate Identity sits at the heart of this conversation. How did you navigate the responsibility of translating Kazakh ancestral tamga symbolism into a contemporary sports and lifestyle context without reducing those symbols to mere aesthetic decoration, and what principles guided that line of thinking throughout the project?

My intention was never to use cultural symbols as decoration. I approached Kazakh visual heritage as a source of knowledge rather than a source of ornament.Instead of directly reproducing traditional tamgas, I studied the principles behind them: belonging, lineage, memory and connection to land. These principles informed the structure of the identity rather than its surface appearance. For me, cultural sensitivity means translating meaning, not copying form. The goal was to create a contemporary identity that respects its origins while remaining relevant to a global audience. Every design decision was guided by authenticity, research and cultural responsibility.

The Ruh Corporate Identity draws on the mountain formations of Kazakhstan as a structural influence on its typographic system, which is a genuinely rare methodological choice in corporate identity design. In what way did the study of topographic line patterns inform not just the visual character of the letterforms but also the underlying grid architecture that holds the entire identity system together?

The mountain landscapes of Kazakhstan became a structural reference throughout the project.I studied topographic maps and contour line systems, not only for their visual beauty but for the way they organize information. These patterns informed the rhythm of the typography, the spacing between elements and the overall grid architecture. As a result, the identity behaves much like a landscape itself: layered, interconnected and adaptive. The mountains influenced not only how the project looks but how it is constructed and functions as a system.

Behind the Design

Credits, team members and technical details provided by the designer.

Unique Properties
Ruh is a culturally rooted sports and lifestyle identity system built on the idea that human strength originates from the land. Everything we consume grows from the earth, and this natural energy becomes part of human movement and physical expression. Inspired by the mountains of Kazakhstan, the identity translates this philosophy into a contemporary visual language reflecting strength, balance, and motion. Rather than serving as a decorative reference, Ruh functions as a scalable system where cultural meaning is embedded into structure, allowing the identity to adapt across applications and extend from sportswear into everyday life.
Dimensions & Packaging
Ruh is a fully scalable identity system designed for use across apparel, packaging, print, digital platforms and spatial applications. The modular grid ensures consistent reproduction across sizes and materials.

Production Technology
The identity was developed using vector-based construction, grid systems and iterative form exploration. Topographic line studies and symbolic abstraction techniques were used to translate traditional forms into scalable contemporary graphics. Files are prepared for high-resolution digital and print production.
Design Challenge
The primary challenge was translating culturally sensitive ancestral symbolism into a modern sports and lifestyle identity while maintaining authenticity and clarity. The process required balancing organic forms with structured geometry, ensuring both emotional resonance and functional adaptability within a global market context.
Research
The research focused on transforming a culturally rooted Kazakh brand into a contemporary identity while preserving its cultural code. The key challenge was maintaining authenticity while ensuring clarity, scalability, and global readability. The study combined analysis of traditional symbolic structures with the exploration of Kazakh mountain forms and topographic patterns. These insights informed the development of a modular identity system that translates cultural meaning into a structured, adaptable visual language suitable for international expansion.
Inspiration
Ruh translates Kazakh mountain topography and ancestral symbolic systems into a contemporary visual identity. Rooted in the concept of inner spirit, the project explores how landscape, memory, and inherited cultural logic can be transformed into a structured design language. Inspired by natural formations and tamga symbolism, the identity reflects continuity, movement, and inner strength within a modern global context.
Project Duration
The project was developed in 2025 between Kazakhstan and Los Angeles. It combines cultural research rooted in Kazakh heritage with contemporary design methodologies studied in the United States.
Operation Flow
The Ruh identity functions as a modular visual system adaptable across apparel, print, digital and environmental applications.

The symbol, grid structure and motion-inspired graphic elements create a consistent rhythm across touchpoints. The system ensures recognizability while allowing flexibility in scale, composition and material use. It is designed to support brand storytelling through pattern expansion, movement-based compositions and layered visual narratives.
