PRISM DESIGN is an international architecture and design studio whose partners have worked for many years in architectural design in various disciplines. These areas of expertise range from interior design, product design, and exhibition design (commercial spaces, hospitality, residential, health and wellness bars, restaurants, retail and office design), to art direction and design consulting for companies operating in the furniture and fashion industries. Our team is composed of a group of creative people from different backgrounds, working together in an ongoing cultural exchange. All work carried out by the Studio is characterized by a strong design identity, the result of assiduous research and creativity. This identity is found throughout all of our work and allows for innovative design and the extension of the parameters of architecture and design. Located in the historic centre of SHANGHAI_CHINA, the studio was founded in 2009 by TOMOHIRO KATSUKI. While the headquarters are still in SHANGHAI, the studio has expanded to include international operations and now has offices in BEIJING_CHINA (2011) and TOKYO_JAPAN (2011) . The creative process is akin to a journey, undertaken in close collaboration with the client, creating a strong interaction between people, objects and space. These goals are achieved in agreement with each other and can bring unforeseen results, finding a balance between rational functionality and the emotional realm. Our work obtains its inspiration from continuous research and through multiple artistic influences. Each new project is a source for constant growth and evolution.

Interview with TOMOHIRO KATSUKI

Could you please tell us more about your art and design background? What made you become an artist/designer? Have you always wanted to be a designer?
When I was in my teens, I was playing in Play Area daily.Then, I look about CAFE,Bar,Restaurant,Boutique etc.It was affected a lot and I wanted to make it.Then I attended a specialized design school and entered the design studio.

How do you think the "design field" is evolving? What is the future of design?
There is a tendency that it becomes excessive information and similar things increase too much. More individuality becomes more important.
Where do you live? Do you feel the cultural heritage of your country affects your designs? What are the pros and cons during designing as a result of living in your country?
I live in Shanghai, China. It depends greatly on culture, history, and politics.
How do you work with companies?
We are doing various collaborations depending on the situation of the project.
What are your suggestions to companies for working with a designer? How can companies select a good designer?
Spirit, young age, responsibility, tenacious perseverance.We will collaborate on this basis.
Can you talk a little about your design process?
Hearing, research, assumption, confirmation, adjustment, implementation, completion, after-follow. This is the flow.
From your perspective, what would you say are some positives and negatives of being a designer?
Positive; a story that does not end.Negative; a story that does not end.
Which tools do you use during design? What is inside your toolbox? Such as software, application, hardware, books, sources of inspiration etc.?
We use various tools.General PC software, physical drawing＆modeling etc.
What are your future plans? What is next for you?
My dream is to perform designs of various genres in Multi,I would like to create an institution like a school that teaches the final result for young designer eggs.

Designer of the Day Interview with TOMOHIRO KATSUKI

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I started this work from since 2000, in Japan Osaka.I will work in Japan for seven years, I will move to Shanghai in 2007.In 2009 we established PRISM DESIGN in Shanghai and we are now in the process.
How did you become a designer?
When I was in my teens, I was playing in Play Area daily.Then, I look about CAFE,Bar,Restaurant,Boutique etc.It was affected a lot and I wanted to make it.Then I attended a specialized design school and entered the design studio.
What are your priorities, technique and style when designing?
First of all, we will construct a style according to client's request.Next, we will conduct a lot of analyzes including location analysis, request arrangement, market analysis and so on.Then, we will find possibilities with the latest technology and traditional low tech modeling, in various ways.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
It is similar to writing a novel.We accumulate things one by one, and eventually it has become a mysterious finale.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
I have worked part-time in various industries and interacted with various people. What is important in life is generosity to diversity and change.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
My dream is to perform designs of various genres in Multi,I would like to create an institution like a school that teaches the final result for young designer eggs.
What are your advices to designers who are at the beginning of their career?
I would like to recommend that you should enjoy the task purely without prejudice to all things.
You are truly successful as a designer, what do you suggest to fellow designers, artists and architects?
I do not care about others, I want you to be pure with respect to the originality of my heart.
What is your day to day look like?
I wake up everyday, drink coffee, go to work, drink coffee, listening good music, have drink coffee, Facing day to day business, drink coffee and the day is over.
How do you keep up with latest design trends? To what extent do design trends matter?
Not much trend is necessary. We are not following the trend. Our mission is to be the biggest partner of our clients' dreams.
How do you know if a product or project is well designed? How do you define good design?
Balance is all important.Exterior design, function, accuracy, value to the market, production cost etc. There is a need to balance everything.
Would you tell us a bit about your lifestyle and culture?
My origin is Japan. And now I am working in Shanghai. Music and culture strongly influence the design.It is like a spiritual Zen.
Would you tell us more about your work culture and business philosophy?
We are built with members who sympathize with Asia's IDENTITY regardless of race.It may be a bit like an IT company.Unspecified number, and members are changing according to circumstances.
What are your philanthropic contributions to society as a designer, artist and architect?
Participation in forums, investment in young entrepreneurs, etc. are protecting the contribution of design assets to the next generation.
What positive experiences you had when you attend the A’ Design Award?
It is an important award for confirming world standards.And there is a wonderful opportunity to interact with designers active in the world.

Could you please tell us about your experience as a designer, artist, architect or creator?
I start to work from the age of 20, in Osaka Japan. Mainly of commercial design work.
How did you become a designer?
At that time in Osaka, commercial design is lively. Boutiques, restaurants, bars, and clubs, a new culture was born one after another. I was longing to it.
Which emotions do you feel when designing?
I regardless of the genre, corresponding to all of the problems. And we aim to resolve.
What particular aspects of your background shaped you as a designer?
Every day, please imagine a well become future. And the continuation of the effort. Let's meet a lot of peoples.
What is your growth path? What are your future plans? What is your dream design project?
The difference of thinking time. The difference between the period of it imagine the beautiful future.
