About Enclave Garden

Due to the aesthetics and expectations of the owners, the garden was planned as an enclave in the middle of the city. What seemed like a challenge at first ultimately turned out to be an advantage. The garden includes a multi level area with several relaxation zones amidst greenery. There are several terraces in the immediate vicinity of the house. In one of them, amidst the silence and sound of water, the owner reads books and in the next one, the whole family feasts over dinner. In summer, the family's life moves to the swimming pool area.

Enclave Garden by Paulina Jonczyk situates itself within the evolving discourse of contemporary residential landscape architecture where the swimming pool transitions from purely recreational infrastructure to become a central compositional element around which layered ecological planting unfolds, engaging with design movements that seek to reconcile geometric modernist clarity with the textural abundance and seasonal dynamism of naturalistic perennial meadow aesthetics, the work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of spatial hierarchy through the strategic deployment of horizontal planes including reflective water surfaces, manicured lawn panels, and timber decking that establish restful chromatic intervals between zones of intensive polychromatic planting, the foreground water feature carved from honed charcoal stone exemplifies contemporary minimalist sculptural sensibility where material honesty and geometric purity create formal punctuation within the softer organic matrix of surrounding vegetation, this dialogue between architectural precision and horticultural exuberance reflects design philosophies articulated by practitioners including Piet Oudolf whose layered planting strategies emphasize textural composition, seasonal variation, and the visual choreography of grasses and perennials across temporal cycles, the chromatic orchestration reveals particular accomplishment in the deployment of deep burgundy-crimson foliage masses against silvery-lavender flowering spikes creating complementary color harmonies that intensify mutual saturation while the luminous turquoise pool water provides cool tonal counterpoint anchoring the warmer vegetative palette, the background layer of golden ornamental grasses backlit to create aureoles of honeyed luminosity demonstrates understanding of how light interacts with botanical structure to produce ephemeral atmospheric effects that shift across diurnal and seasonal progressions, technically the composition exhibits the precision associated with professional architectural photography including the tilt-shift lens correction that maintains parallel vertical lines while achieving extraordinary depth of field rendering all spatial zones from immediate foreground through distant background in crisp focus, this democratic distribution of visual clarity invites prolonged contemplation as the eye discovers successive layers of textural and chromatic detail without hierarchical privileging of any single zone, the integration of contemporary outdoor furniture and pale timber decking suggests the garden functions not merely as visual spectacle but as inhabited domestic space where aesthetic contemplation and quotidian leisure activities coexist, the careful edging of lawn panels and the precision with which planting beds meet architectural elements reveals meticulous maintenance regimes that sustain the designed vision across seasons, the substantial masses of ornamental grasses and the presence of young tree standards indicate the garden exists in active maturation suggesting the designer's engagement with temporal processes and the understanding that landscape composition unfolds across years rather than achieving static completion, the work participates in broader cultural conversations regarding sustainable residential landscape practice where ecological diversity, habitat provision, and seasonal interest increasingly complement traditional aesthetic concerns, the deployment of perennial species rather than annual bedding plants suggests commitment to long-term ecological stability and reduced maintenance intensity once establishment occurs, the visual enclosure provided by background woody vegetation creates sanctuary-like intimacy transforming the private garden into what landscape theorists term a hortus conclusus or enclosed garden archetype resonating with deep cultural associations of protected cultivated nature, the composition invites viewers to consider how contemporary residential landscapes might integrate multiple functions including recreation, aesthetic contemplation, ecological stewardship, and seasonal awareness within coherent spatial frameworks that honor both human design intention and botanical vitality, one might observe how the foreground fountain's vertical jet introduces kinetic animation and auditory dimension to what the static photographic document can only suggest, the play of water movement and sound contributing sensory richness beyond the visual register, the carefully calibrated progression from cool pool blues through warm crimson foliage to golden grasses and finally forest greens creates chromatic journey that guides attention through spatial depth while establishing emotional progression from refreshing coolness to warm abundance to sheltering enclosure, how does this integration of water, stone, timber, lawn, and layered perennial planting propose new models for residential outdoor space that transcend mere decoration to become ecologically engaged, seasonally responsive, aesthetically sophisticated environments for contemporary dwelling.

Unique Properties
The garden is located on a plot of land with a significant difference in terrain, both along its entire length and in relation to the neighboring gardens. The highest zone is a representative and recreational zone with seven terraces and a water element. In the heart of the house there is a patio with a place to relax. Central recreation area with swimming pool, fireplace with woodshed and gazebo with summer kitchen. The lowest area is a vegetable garden and a mini orchard.

Production Technology
Between the highest and lowest parts of the garden, the level difference is almost 3m. A significant part of the implementation consisted of construction works on the swimming pool, gazebo, retaining walls, terraces and sidewalks. A very large amount of land was transported to the entire garden. The walkways are made of large concrete slabs measuring 1m x 1m in gray, referring to the color of the floor in the house. The garden is supported in every dimension by intelligent system technology.
Design Challenge
The challenge was to adapt the garden to the height of the house, street and neighboring plots. Each of them was on a different level, which was a conflict with the designed garden. Another problem was the width of the plot only 24 m and the lack of technical access to the utility part located in the farthest place in the garden. The achievement was to hide the road for cars with a long stabilized lawn.
Project Duration
Project completed in 2023. The construction of the garden started spring 2023 and was finished autumn 2024. Localization Garwolin, Poland.
Operation Flow
The project aimed to create an enclave for a large, multi-generational family by separating different relaxation zones surrounded by greenery. The owners of the house start every morning by seeing the garden from the windows of the house, spend the evenings on the terrace, and feasts instead of at the dining table continue on the terrace in the garden. On sunny days, they open windows and enjoy the scent of flowers. The view from the large windows of the house must always attract attention, and the external surroundings of the house are an extension of the living space.
Research
Large garden located on a busy street. An important element is understanding the potential of the area, the needs of owners and family life, and making the space outside the house more attractive. Elements of garden architecture were coherently designed with the house and strictly according to the guidelines dictated by the owners. The selection of vegetation was also not accidental, we focused on base plants, evergreen plants and those that change at the turn of the seasons and attract insects.
Inspiration
The inspiration for the project was, on the one hand, a modern shape of the house located right next to a busy street, on the other hand, fields and meadows where horses graze. The owners' passion for modern style as well as the needs of a multi-generational and large family related to relaxation in a garden resembling a city resort in the middle of nature had an undoubted impact on the project. Due to the terrain the garden was designed on three different levels, divided into 3 different zone.
