About Skybow New Cultural Landmark
Skybow is a landmark sculpture created for Wuyou Town in Yan City, Jiangsu Province. The form is based on the local topography, which resembles a bow, with the Chuanchang River as the handle and the Pearl Creek as the string. The main structure takes the shape of a drawn bow to express readiness and courage. Relief patterns on the surface form a cultural totem. The inner ring of the pedestrian walkway is engraved with the historical timeline of the town. Lighting, a water curtain and flowing lights complete the setting.
Yin Xiaofeng and Luo Wei's Skybow New Cultural Landmark emerges as a significant contribution to contemporary landscape architecture, synthesizing monumental sculptural gesture with thoughtfully orchestrated public space to create a destination that serves both civic and contemplative functions. The work demonstrates sophisticated understanding of how large-scale architectural interventions can anchor community identity while providing frameworks for quotidian engagement, its soaring parabolic arch establishing a recognizable silhouette that transforms the waterfront site into a place of gathering and reflection. The designers appear to engage with traditions of gateway architecture while advancing contemporary parametric design sensibilities, achieving structural elegance through the graceful tapering and precise curvature of the primary arch and its subsidiary elements. Particularly notable is the integration of concentric circular pathways that radiate from the central pavilion, establishing a spatial choreography that invites varied approaches and dwelling patterns while maintaining clear orientation toward the sculptural focal point. The chromatic restraint, limiting the primary structure to pristine white against the muted earth tones of the natural environment, amplifies the landmark's visibility while allowing seasonal landscape changes to provide evolving contextual dialogue. The relationship between the vertical aspiration of the arch and the horizontal expansion of the waterway creates a compelling spatial tension, with the structure serving as both frame for distant views and destination in its own right. The work invites consideration of how contemporary public spaces might balance spectacle with intimacy, monumentality with accessibility, and how sculptural interventions can enhance rather than dominate their natural settings while fostering community connection and individual contemplation.

- Unique Properties
- By collecting information on Wuyou Town, analyzing the topography and exploring the cultural heritage of the site, we aim to create a new landmark. The conceptual design for the architectural landmark sculpture is based on the unique topography of Wuyou, shaped like a 'bow.' The bow-shaped structure also represents Wuyou's constant readiness, like a drawn bow, poised and ready to move forward with courage.

- Design Challenge
- Choosing an appropriate location to build a landmark requires meeting four simultaneous conditions: at the entrance of the ancient town, near a prominent building, along the skyline that traverses the town's millennia-old history, and adjacent to a small riverside lawn.
- Project Duration
- Yan City, Jiangsu Province
- Operation Flow
- The relief design on the main structure's surface forms a symbolic cultural totem, inheriting and promoting the culture of Wuyou. The innermost ring of the pedestrian walkway is engraved with the historical timeline of Wuyou's development, creating a culturally immersive atmosphere and adding an interactive element to the sculpture. The interplay of light and shadow, water curtain, and rainbow flowing lights, against the backdrop of Wuyou's historical timeline, weaves a fascinating and insightful narrative. Viewers can actively engage and step into this world, as if walking through the inspiring journey of Wuyou's development.
- Inspiration
- Wuyou resembles a bow, with Chuanchang River forming the bow handle, stretching from the north to the south of Ji Town. The Pearl Creek, abundant in pearls, represents the bowstring, and the East-West Street acts as the arrow resting on the string. This unique topographical feature exclusive to Wuyou creates the concept of the 'Skybow,' with the main structure taking the form of a bow, symbolizing Wuyou's poised and courageous stance, akin to a drawn bow ready to release.
