Grand Interview
Your innovative die-cut window design in Fabrika Coffee Packaging brilliantly showcases the coffee beans while echoing your logo's grinder blades - could you share the creative journey that led to this distinctive visual solution?
The idea emerged from a deep understanding of the brand’s target audience — coffee enthusiasts who value both craftsmanship and authenticity. During the development process, we referenced visual cues commonly seen in the coffee industry, while aiming to infuse the packaging with a contemporary and relevant tone.We discovered an opportunity to create both a symbolic and physical connection between the product and the brand’s visual system — through a die-cut element that echoes the grinder blades in the logo. This became a defining gesture: it reveals the product inside, reinforces brand identity, and adds a tactile layer of expression that helps the packaging stand out on the shelf.
The research phase for Fabrika Coffee Packaging involved studying both traditional and modern coffee packaging trends - how did your findings shape your approach to balancing classic coffee values with contemporary design language?
We approached this balance with intention. Typography became our grounding element — inspired by classical coffee packaging — while the structural detail (the die-cut window) served as the expressive gesture. We introduced rich, expressive colors to differentiate varieties and elevate the personality of the brand. This combination allowed us to remain rooted in coffee’s heritage while signaling a fresh, design-forward attitude.
Your choice of recycled cardboard with specific density metrics for Fabrika Coffee Packaging demonstrates a commitment to sustainability - what considerations guided your material selection process and how does it align with current environmental concerns in packaging design?
We deliberately chose a textured kraft board to evoke tactility, warmth, and a sense of hand-crafted quality. In a market saturated with glossy, overly polished materials, this decision helped us express the brand’s values of honesty, rawness, and artisanal care. The material’s recycled nature and density offered durability while aligning with our broader sustainability goals. By choosing a substrate that isn’t yet standard for premium packaging, we hope to inspire a shift toward more responsible material usage without sacrificing shelf appeal.

- Dimensions & Packaging
- The packaging measures 120 mm x 80 mm x 250 mm and is made from recycled cardboard with a density of 350 grams per square meter. A matte finish with UV varnish is applied to enhance durability. The inner surface is treated to preserve the product's aroma. The packaging holds 250 grams of coffee and is equipped with a resealable ziplock for reuse.

- Production Technology
- The design was created using offset printing on high-quality recycled paper, combined with a die-cut window to emphasize the brand logo and showcase the product. The clean typographic layout follows minimalist principles to create a balance between visual appeal and functionality. We used eco-friendly inks and techniques to ensure the sustainability of the packaging without compromising durability or appearance.
- Design Challenge
- The main creative challenge was finding a balance between classic and modern packaging design. Limitations in production capabilities and available materials also posed difficulties, as it was necessary to maintain high-quality standards while minimizing costs.
- Research
- The research began with studying traditional design and modern trends in coffee packaging design. We conducted a survey among consumers about their preferences for packaging design and functionality. Based on the survey results, concepts were developed using a data-driven design methodology. As a result of the research, a minimalist packaging with functional elements, such as a window showcasing the natural product, was chosen.
- Inspiration
- The coffee trend today is possibly at its highest point of popularity in history. There are countless truly interesting design options in the segment. However, our goal was not to compete for the title of most innovative design in this race. We wanted to create a clear image that would appeal to both classic coffee enthusiasts and representatives of the new wave. Our aim was for the style to reflect the time-tested values of the coffee brand while being visualized in a contemporary language.
- Project Duration
- The project started in January 2022 in Moscow and was completed in May 2022
- Operation Flow
- The Fabrika Coffee packaging is designed for convenient and reusable use. The ziplock seal allows the package to be easily opened and closed, maintaining product freshness. The window on the front, through which the coffee beans can be seen, helps consumers assess the product's quality. The packaging is compact and easily stored on a shelf, making it convenient for use at home or in cafés.
