About Royal Enclosure 1619 Packaging Design
Royal Enclosure 1619 is a wooden gift box created for deer antler slices, a traditional Chinese tonic. A metal dragon seal rests on the lid and serves as the key. The magnetic dragon head must be lifted before the wooden box can be opened to the left and right. The base of the dragon head is engraved with the brand logo and can be used as a stamp. Royal motifs are presented through modern graphic design and recall the imperial hunting ground of the Qing Dynasty. The opening sequence gives the package a sense of ritual.
Zhou Jingkuan's Royal Enclosure 1619 Packaging Design exemplifies contemporary approaches to luxury packaging that draw substantial inspiration from historical decorative traditions, demonstrating how commercial design practice can function as cultural transmission and heritage celebration while fulfilling practical product protection and brand differentiation objectives. The work appears rooted in established traditions of premium gift packaging where material quality, surface ornamentation, structural complexity, and symbolic content combine to communicate value, occasion significance, and cultural sophistication, transforming utilitarian container function into aesthetic experience and meaningful object. The compositional achievement rests substantially in the hierarchical orchestration of multiple elements into coherent visual narrative, the elevated box with its leaping deer motif commanding primary attention through chromatic contrast, figural animation, and spatial positioning, while supporting elements provide contextual framing and structural foundation without competing for focal dominance. The chromatic sophistication demonstrates fluency in traditional color symbolism, the golden substrates evoking imperial associations, prosperity, celebration, and autumn harvest abundance, while the saturated blue passages provide complementary visual energy and suggest celestial realms, the vermillion seal marks offering authentic cultural notation and calligraphic authority, the overall palette achieving both historical resonance and contemporary refinement. Technical execution reveals meticulous attention to surface treatment, the embossed or printed architectural motifs suggesting palace walls or ritual enclosures creating tactile interest and layered visual complexity, the geometric patterning providing textural richness without overwhelming the primary deer imagery, the crisp die-cutting and precise material joining demonstrating manufacturing sophistication and quality control befitting premium market positioning. The thematic content engages multiple symbolic registers simultaneously, the leaping deer carrying auspicious connotations within traditional iconographic vocabularies while suggesting vitality, natural grace, seasonal transition, and perhaps commemorative significance tied to the 1619 designation, the plum blossoms emerging from antlers suggesting early spring, perseverance, renewal, and the integration of flora and fauna into harmonious cosmological systems. The work invites consideration of how contemporary commercial design can serve as vehicle for cultural continuity, translating historical aesthetic vocabularies into present contexts, making tradition accessible and relevant, honoring heritage while serving contemporary commercial functions, and elevating everyday consumer transactions through investment in beauty, symbolism, and craftsmanship that extends value beyond mere product protection into realms of gift ritual, cultural celebration, aesthetic pleasure, and meaningful material culture, ultimately posing questions about where commercial design ends and cultural art begins, how functional objects carry symbolic freight, and what role beauty plays in commercial exchange and human connection.

- Research
- The brand story of "Royal Enclosure 1619" originated from Nurhaci, the founder of the Qing Dynasty. He designated a mountain forest in Jilin as the royal hunting ground, which is now the origin of the brand's deer antler products. This packaging needs to convey the brand's unique story, which is a brand cultural advantage that competing products do not possess. Moreover, deer antler slices are extremely rare tonics with high prices. The material and structural design of the wooden box, as well as the royal elements in the design, are sufficient to convey the sense of value of the product.
- Inspiration
- Royal Enclosure 1619 is a high-end brand dedicated to men’s health and vitality, with a core focus on deer-sourced nourishment.
Rooted in history, in 1619, Emperor Nurhaci of the Qing Dynasty established the “Shengjing Imperial Hunting Ground” in the areas of Xifeng and Dongfeng, at the foot of the Changbai Mountains.
The pilose antler produced here has long been the authentic and exclusive medicinal material reserved for the imperial court of the Qing Dynasty.
The number “1619” in the brand name is a tribute to this 400-year legacy of royal nourishment.
The brand culture of "Royal Enclosure 1619" originated from the story of the emperors of the Qing Dynasty establishing the royal hunting ground. Deer antler slices were also once the tonic for the emperor's health preservation. Therefore, many elements related to the royal were extracted in the packaging design to convey the profound history of the brand, a story that other brands do not have. - Image Credits
