Interviews
Grand Interview
The tree canopy motif at the heart of Blend 1601 Coffee Packaging Design is a genuinely inspired choice, translating the ecological reality of shade-grown cultivation into a quiet, almost meditative visual signature. Could you walk us through the moment when this motif crystallized as the central design element, and how you navigated the fine line between symbolic abstraction and ecological authenticity in making it feel both visually compelling and intellectually honest?
The canopy motif emerged at a moment when we stopped thinking about coffee packaging and started thinking about protection. At the beginning of the project, we were exploring the concept of shade-grown coffee, where coffee plants thrive beneath the shelter of larger trees. While researching this cultivation method, we realized that the idea of shade was not merely agricultural; it was symbolic. Shade represents care, resilience, continuity, and a harmonious relationship with nature. This insight resonated deeply with Blend 1601’s own story. At the heart of the brand stands the ancient IDA olive tree, a living witness to more than a thousand years of history. What made this connection even more meaningful was the tree’s journey itself. Before becoming a symbol of the brand, the tree was rescued from being lost and carefully relocated by the founder to his farm, where it continues to live and flourish today. In many ways, the story was already about protection long before we started designing the packaging. At that point, the connection became clear. The protective canopy of shade-grown coffee and the enduring presence of the IDA olive tree were expressing the same idea through different forms of nature. We realized we were not creating a metaphor; we were revealing one that already existed within the brand’s story. From then on, the canopy was no longer just a visual reference to coffee cultivation. It became a bridge between the product and the brand’s heritage. The challenge was avoiding a literal illustration of trees or landscapes. We wanted the design to feel contemplative rather than descriptive. Instead of depicting nature directly, we abstracted the canopy into a layered visual language that evokes shelter, depth, and organic growth. At the same time, we remained careful not to romanticize the concept. Every visual decision was grounded in the genuine ecological principles behind shade-grown farming and in the authentic story of the IDA olive tree. For us, the strongest packaging designs are not those that explain everything at first glance, but those that invite discovery. The canopy motif allowed us to create that balance, remaining visually distinctive while staying faithful to the environmental and cultural narratives that inspired it.
Sustainability in packaging has become one of the most debated topics among design audiences worldwide, and Blend 1601 Coffee Packaging Design takes a notably thoughtful position by anchoring its material choices in eco-friendly kraft pouches with high-barrier lining. How did the selection of this specific material system shape the overall design language of Blend 1601 Coffee Packaging Design, and in what ways did working within the constraints of sustainable materials actually push the creative direction of the project forward rather than limiting it?
For us, sustainability was never intended to be a separate layer added onto the project. It was part of the story from the very beginning. Since Blend 1601 draws inspiration from shade-grown coffee cultivation and the enduring presence of the ancient IDA olive tree, it was important that the packaging reflected the same respect for natural origins. The choice of eco-friendly kraft pouches with a high-barrier lining became a defining element of the design language rather than a technical specification. The natural texture, warmth, and tactile quality of the material helped us move away from the glossy, overly engineered aesthetic often found in specialty coffee packaging. Instead, it encouraged a more honest and human visual expression. Interestingly, the material’s constraints became creative opportunities. Kraft surfaces demand clarity and restraint, which pushed us toward a minimalist visual system centered around the tree-shadow motif, carefully balanced proportions, and a distinctive color palette for each blend. Rather than competing with the material, the design works in partnership with it. We believe sustainability is most powerful when it feels intrinsic rather than performative. In Blend 1601, the material choice, the ecological narrative, and the visual identity all support the same idea: creating a premium coffee experience that feels both authentic and responsible.
What is particularly fascinating about Blend 1601 Coffee Packaging Design is the way it bridges ecological philosophy and sensory experience through synesthetic thinking, assigning specific color palettes to individual blends as a visual language for taste, as seen in the bold teal tone chosen for the Efso Blend to reflect its smooth opening and intense finish. Could you elaborate on the research and intuitive processes behind mapping flavor profiles to color in Blend 1601 Coffee Packaging Design, and what this approach reveals about the broader potential of synesthetic design thinking in the packaging industry?
Our goal was not to create a scientific translation of flavor into color, but an emotional one. When developing the visual identity, we spent time understanding not only the tasting notes of each coffee but also the overall feeling it created. Some blends felt bright and energetic, while others felt deeper, smoother, or more layered. The color system emerged from this intersection of sensory perception and intuition. For example, the bold teal chosen for the Efso Blend reflects the way we experienced it: smooth and approachable at first, yet leaving a memorable and intense impression. Rather than describing flavor literally, the color acts as a visual cue that prepares the consumer for a certain experience. We believe this kind of synesthetic thinking has significant potential in packaging design. As consumers increasingly seek emotional connections rather than technical information alone, color can become a powerful storytelling tool, helping brands communicate character, mood, and experience before a product is even opened.

- Production Technology
- Production reinforces the tactile warmth of the "Shade-Grown" concept. Labels feature balanced proportions and softened 4 mm corners for an organic feel. Printed with high-resolution offset on textured paper, they combine clarity with tactility. Hand-applied onto eco-friendly kraft pouches, slight imperfections are preserved, reflecting artisanal authenticity and the balance between natural process and precision.
- Design Challenge
- The challenge was translating a technical concept into an emotional visual language while balancing premium perception with warmth. This required precise control of typography, color, and illustration to avoid both oversimplification and technical overload. Another key task was creating a scalable identity system that differentiates blends while maintaining consistency. The result is a unified system that communicates complexity with clarity.
- Research
- This project explores emotional responses to specialty coffee packaging and the role of visual language in perceived quality. Research revealed a gap between technical packaging and the demand for warmth and storytelling. "Shade-Grown" emerged as a key narrative. The resulting strategy shifts from data-heavy communication to sensory storytelling, combining organic visuals and tactile materials to balance premium positioning with human connection.
- Inspiration
- Inspired by the "Shade-Grown" cultivation method, this design translates an ecological philosophy into a visual language. Coffee beans that mature slowly beneath the protective canopy of forest trees embody patience, balance, and harmony with nature. This relationship is expressed through a minimalist tree-shadow motif, symbolizing protection and natural rhythm. The raw kraft surface reflects the soil and organic origins, while vibrant label colors represent the energy and character of coffee cherries thriving in shaded microclimates. Moving away from sterile, technical coffee packaging, the design aims to create an emotional connection -inviting users into a warm, sensory, and nature-rooted experience.
- Project Duration
- Turkey, 2025
- Operation Flow
- The design uses an intuitive, icon-driven system to simplify interaction. A bean icon indicates whole beans, while a droplet represents ground coffee, enabling instant recognition. The front label introduces the "Shade-Grown" story through color and composition, while the back delivers structured information such as origin and brewing. This dual-layer approach balances emotional engagement with functional clarity.
