About Codice Wine Bottle

Codice is a packaging design for a wine bottle, inspired by medieval codices. Codices were handwritten books made before the invention of the printing press, in which the capital letters became works of art. The label is produced on paper with reliefs and stamping and is applied to a Bordeaux bottle. A sheet of sealed vegetal paper wraps the bottle and carries illustrations of the symbols of the winery. The paper is closed with sealing wax at the top, so the content is revealed only when the wrapper is opened.

Estudio Maba's Codice Wine Bottle represents a remarkable achievement in contemporary packaging design that draws profound inspiration from the illuminated manuscript traditions of the medieval scriptorium, transforming the everyday wine bottle into an object of contemplative beauty and cultural resonance. The design employs a sophisticated strategy of revelation and concealment, wrapping the vessel in papers that must be partially unwrapped to discover the treasures within, thereby transforming the act of opening into a ceremonial unveiling reminiscent of accessing precious archival documents. The embossed outer wrapper demonstrates exceptional technical accomplishment in blind debossing, creating intricate relief patterns that reference the decorative borders of historical codices while the Gothic letterforms establish immediate period associations. Beneath this protective layer, fragments of illuminated manuscript imagery emerge in the authentic chromatic vocabulary of medieval illumination: lapis lazuli blues, vermillion reds, and burnished gold that historically signified both devotional significance and material preciousness. The chalice motif centralizes both literally and symbolically, connecting wine's sacramental associations with the devotional function of medieval manuscripts, suggesting the transformation of ordinary substance into something transcendent. The typography program skillfully integrates multiple historical references, from the bold decorated capitals of display lettering to the dense blackletter passages suggesting ecclesiastical documentation. This layered approach invites extended engagement, rewarding close examination with discovered details while maintaining powerful shelf presence through its vertical composition and dramatic tonal contrasts. The design positions its contents within a lineage of cultural transmission, suggesting that wine, like sacred texts, carries accumulated knowledge and tradition across generations. Viewers might contemplate how the packaging's controlled deterioration through the tearing ritual creates unique individual artifacts, each unwrapping producing a singular aesthetic object.
