The Design

About Kanpai Citrus Liqueur

Kanpai is a packaging design for a citrus liqueur produced in Taichung City, Taiwan. Taichung City is the largest citrus growing area in Taiwan, yet local citrus liqueur was rare, so a new processing method was developed for the drink. The name Kanpai means bottoms up in Chinese and refers to a celebration. Geometric images of tankan and ponkan citrus fruits form the main icons of the packaging. The texture of citrus skin is shown through partial glazing and punching. The package measures 80 by 80 by 240 millimetres.

Design Challenge
As the agricultural products are comparatively cheaper in retail pricing, the major task in this packaging design is to promote the product identity and corresponding pricing policy.
Research
This project is conducted based on Design Research in order to generate the most desirable result via repeating design modification based on sample consumers' feedbacks in various surveys. The sample slots were selected from higher education institutes, local community centres and on-line survey sources. The results suggest a strategy to retrieve the citrus geometric elements and colour as the two major elements in packaging design.
Inspiration
Taichung City serves as the largest planting area of citrus fruits in Taiwan. However, there is barely any citrus liqueur made by local produce. Therefore a newly developed processing skill was developed to create this brand new product, named after "Kansai" (means Bottoms Up in Chinese) to call for a celebration.
Project Duration
The project commenced in May 2022 and completed by October 2022 in Taichung City. The marketing activities were launched in December 2022.
Operation Flow
Chill, Twist-off and Kanpai.
